Favorite book: Whatever is on my kindle.

Favorite quote: “The richest person in the world is not who has the most, but who needs the least.”

What do you like best about walking and/or running? Being “locationally independent”, I like that I can do it anywhere and it will be different each and every time.

What inspires you to keep a regular exercise routine?

Being healthy and the improved quality of life that comes from living my full potential physically.

What are some tips you have about eating a healthy diet?

Awareness – to truly enjoy each bite slowly. Plus tracking what you eat throughout the day.

What is the biggest obstacle you have overcome (this could be exercise related, career related, or anything in your life)?

My biggest obstacle was letting go of other people’s expectations. I still struggle with that, but the freedom that comes from living my own life instead of trying to live up to an ideal or someone else’s idea of ‘normal’ is so worth it!

Your favorite place in the world you have walked/run/hiked:

I need a high tree to people ratio for my ultimate happiness. I really enjoyed living in Western North Carolina between Asheville and the Smoky Mountains.

Anything else interesting about you:

I love to volunteer at the Whatcom Humane Society to get my cat TLC fix. They think it is for them, but it’s really for me!

Day 292: Back to the drawing board.

Goal:  Eat 1 apple each day this week.

Good afternoon. Well, here I sit knowing I have to start the Fit School over. I got off track and ended up in Candyland and frozen Pizzaville. I won’t lie to you – it was a nice visit, the locals are so nice and tasty. It took me three months to mess up what it had taken me six months to do, which in my eyes was get healthy, be in a healthy mindset, and be actually happy in my own skin. So, I figured I was standing at a crossroads where I could continue down the same path I was on over a year ago, and believe me, that path took years upon years to beat down. If scientist would take a thermal pressure picture from a satellite, like the way they did in Egypt around the pyramids to see how many millions of people must have treaded around the area to build those great tombs (Man I hope I’m explaining that right or this bit is going to bomb), my old path would show up like a red snake swimming down a green river. Anyway, I could continue on that old snake path, or I could make a right turn like I did back in March and get back on the healthy path. I’m making a right. I e-mailed Carol today to let her know I didn’t want to start completely over, but it’s her call. She’s the Guru, and I am the student.
The main thing is, I’m willing to start over. That’s the most important thing. I’m not going to ride myself like Seabiscuit anymore and feel guilty about messing up, I’m going to start feeling good about going back to the drawing board and painting some sweet pictures.
I hope everybody has a great day and enjoys my stick figures because I can’t draw to save my life, but at least I know what it is.

Day 276: Where the heck have you been, Barry? Oh you know…

Week 40:  Eat 1 apple each day.

Good morning. Holy molli, it’s been a long time. I’m just going to get it out there in the open. I’ve been slip’n. I can tell you how I have pinched nerves in my back and how I just haven’t been myself lately, but the truth of the matter is, I’m off track. I do have pinched nerves in my back but that shouldn’t make my eating habits the way they are. I haven’t eaten an apple in two weeks, and I don’t even remember what a baby carrot tastes like. Oh wait a minute, yes I do,… AWFUL. I fell out folks. I’ve gained seven pounds. I’ve been eating frozen pizzas the way penguins eat fish. Just one bite and GULP. I’m trying to find humor but humor is eluding me. I really don’t even think the penguin bit is that funny. Now the play on words with penguin and bit I think is hilarious, but that’s just me. Anyway, I’m unmotivated and I HAVE to get back on track. I don’t want to let anybody down, but most of all, I don’t want to let myself down.
I hope everybody out there is staying motivated and if you have any words of motivation, please send them my way.

Barry J

Day 183: Now you see it, now you don’t…steam that is.

Week 26: Eat 2 cups of cooked or baked whole grains each day this week.

Good afternoon. I just picked up Luke, and we’re heading to the park to enjoy some sunshine and sliding boards. I think today will be a better day than yesterday. It’s funny how things build up. Well, let me restate that – it isn’t funny at all, in fact it’s the exact opposite of funny. Sometimes the things people do just amaze me, and the only time I like to be amazed is when my son shows me something he has found for the first time and finds amazing himself, or by a good magic trick ( I really like a good magic trick). I guess there are some other instances where I like to be taken aback in disbelief, but none of them are in a bad way by people who should know better. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’m sorry for blowing off steam on the blog yesterday. It’s probably not the place to do it.
As far as being healthy is concerned, I feel I’m doing really well. I haven’t missed a day of weight training and I can tell the difference in my muscle tone already.
Well, Luke is ready to go and you know the drill there. When he says jump, I just love to jump with him and say “ribbit” as I’m doing it.
I hope everybody has a great day and gets to see a good magic trick.
Later, Barry J.

Day 152: You get what you get today.

Week 21: Walk/Run 30 minutes, 4 days this week – Walk 10 minutes, (run 1 minute / walk 1 minute) x5, Walk 10 minutes

Barry J Juggling Apples

Good afternoon. I’m running so far behind today I can actually see myself from behind, and I got to tell you that I’m looking pretty thin compared to March. I have to cut it real short. I’m feeling good, and life is good. I went for a walk / jog last night even though I was totally wiped out after work but I woke up feeling energized!  That’s was a good thing because it’s been a nonstop-a go-go today.
I hope everybody has a great day and takes a minute for themselves, because that’s what I did today.
