Week 21:Â Eat 1 1/2 cups cooked or baked whole grains each day this week.
Good morning. Wow, I got to sleep in today so it’s more like good early afternoon. Last night was a fun-filled night and it went by in a blink of an eye. Before I knew it I was driving home and the clock was reading 2:30 am.
Carol gave me my goal for the week which is to to increase my whole grain consumption from a cup to a cup and a half every day. Once again this should be no problem considering I already eat that much anyway. Even as I type this I’m scarfing down my oatmeal with Jif, and at work they usually have some type of whole grain rice up for grabs.
Yesterday something funny happened when Luke and I were hanging out. We were playing hide and seek wrestling (basically it’s the game of hide and seek, but when you find the person who is hiding you put wrestling moves on them and I’m not talking about TV wrestling here – I’m talking what they do in school wrestling. I wrestled one year in high school and I only wish I wrestled every season. So I figure if I can get Luke into it early, maybe he might dig it. He already has a super ankle pick, but his “pancake” needs a little work. I think that’s because I outweigh him by 200 pounds.) What the heck was I talking about?…Oh yeah, man the digression. So Luke’s hiding and to be totally honest with you he’s not the best hider in the world, but again he’s not awful for a 696 day old. We have played this game with other toddlers who have stood in the middle of the room with coats over their heads. If I’m seeking I act like I can’t see them, but Luke goes right for the two point take down. As I said, his single ankle pick is a work of art. Luke’s down fall with hiding is he always hides in the same spots. But to be fare I guess there are only so many places to hide in our home. One of his favorites hiding places is the bedroom closet, but yesterday he decided to try and cover up under some of the boxes that are in there (so he is better than I give him credit for), and he realized that the boxes are actually toy trucks. You see, I’ve been collecting Hess gasoline toy trucks since I was a child. Every year for Christmas Hess comes out with an AWESOME truck (last year it was a car for the first time in its forty years), but not only is it a truck, it lights up and has sirens. It has always been one of my favorite presents on Christmas morning. My Mom still gets me one every year and Luke also gets one now. But in my closet I have about twenty, still in the box. Trucks that I have been saving. For what? And this is the neat part that I forgot about… In case I ever had a child. Some of these trucks are worth some money, but a toy, in my opinion, should not be kept in a box when a kid is around. If I wanted them for their cash value I would have gotten two of them, one to play with and one to collect dust. Anyway. I’m counting out loud to forty-three (that’s what we count to. Luke does it in his own way, but when he gets to the end it sounds like “PROORRTY FREET!!!” which usually takes anywhere from five seconds to three minutes.) When I hear Luke scream at the top of his lungs, “DADO DADO DADO DADO!” I know he’s not hurt or scared because of his tone, so I come into the bedroom saying, “what buddy, what buddy?” He’s smiling pointing at all the boxes. I start laughing thinking to myself “Ahh, it’s about time.” “Wow man, do you want one of them?” I ask and he answers back in Russian, “Da.” I tell him to say please and he comes up to me with a super grin, grabs hold of my leg, gives it a big squeeze, looks up at me with his Frodo Baggins eyes, and says, “please Dado.” My heart melted and I told him he could have one for now. He choose the 2005 emergency truck with rescue vehicle. A GREAT year. It was like passing a torch I tell you, not one to light the way, but one to warm the heart.
I hope everybody has a great day and finds a closet full of good stuff.

Barry J

Week 20:Â Do at least 10 crunches each day this week.
Good morning. Last night was just as crazy as I thought it was going to be, but it was also a lot of fun. After all was said and done, including my drive time, I ended up working fifteen hours. It seems that people in Northeastern PA really like to play craps, and if a dice table is running strong there is no reason to close it down just because the dealers have put in their shift. Nobody on our crew minded working the overtime. It was funny though, on the way out I bumped into Tony who used to deal dice out in Reno and he goes to me, “Man that was a long ride – fun, but long.” I said, “Yeah, like driving to Florida on a family vacation, but actually enjoying the company in the van.”
Luke just brought me one of his New Balance sneakers which I believe is a hint that he wants to go for a walk. It’s either that or he hid the other one and the hunt is on. Now he just bumped his head on the dresser drawer and he doesn’t seem very happy about it at all…Ok I’m back. I kissed his noggin and told him it would be better before he got married. Somebody used to tell me that when I’d get hurt as a kid. Here I am on the verge of forty, not married, not hurting, and I’ve got a great boy – so there’s a lot of truth to that statement because I used to bang myself up like a firecracker on the fourth of July.
In the employee dining room (EDR) last night they had some great chicken Marsala with wild rice. I also had some wonderful cantaloupe and a bunch of water. I’ll tell you what, this company does not skimp out on the free meals they give. Life is good.
Ahh, the other shoe has just arrived and there is a break in the rain, so that means Luke and I are going to head out for a walk and jump in some mud puddles for a while.
I hope everybody has a great day and heals up before they get married, and if you are already married I hope you don’t get hurt.

Week 19:Â Eat 1 1/2 cups lettuce/spinach each day this week.

Barry J
Good morning. Before Luke woke up I was looking for the knob hidden on his body that somebody must have accidentally bumped to… Dare I say it? Would it be politically correct to say the word “terrible” in front of the word two in today’s world without a million people coming down on me like an avalanche in a Jack London novel? I believe I’m supposed to use the word “terrific” instead of terrible. Well, it wasn’t terrific yesterday when he decided to go all Mohamed Ali on my butt for no reason when I asked him for a hug. A hug I did not get. Oh no, I got a left jab with a right upper cut. His form was outstanding, I’ll give him that, but where in the heck did he learn that move? It certainly wasn’t terrific when he didn’t want to eat the meal I made for him so instead of not eating it and throwing a fit…wait for it… wait for it… he threw the food…wait for it… wait for it…in his diaper! Talk about cutting to the chase. He did all of this with a grin that would make Dennis the Menace look like the poster child for Angel of the Month magazine. One minute I’m doing the dishes and when I look over, he has chicken, broccoli and baby carrots on his plate, the next minute he doesn’t. Now my Momma didn’t raise no fool and, sure, there is always some food fallout around him, but not the quantity that was previously on his plate so I walk over to check it out because I don’t like the grin on his mug. That was when I noticed the crown of broccoli sticking out of his Huggies Little Movers enjoying the ride. He started laughing like I just told him my best joke. So of course I have to get him out of this soiled / unsoiled diaper. I go grab another Huggies. I come back out to the kitchen to find that he has taken off his diaper burrito and is acting like a sprinkler system on the floor. TERRIFIC!!!
Man, you’ve got to laugh. It’s good material, that’s all I can say. So far there have been no mishaps, but I’ll roll with whatever he’s got. My healthy lifestyle is going great and I’m looking forward to trying Mark’s Magnificent Burrito today for lunch. I know, I know, sorry Carol, I used the phrase diaper burrito earlier, but that’s what it was. It was a brand new one. Those things are not cheap.
I hope everybody has a TERRIFIC day.

Week 13:Â Eat one cup of grapes each day this week.

Barry J.
Good afternoon. I have to cut it real super short today, reader. Luke has a molar coming in the size of a hot tub that would fit half the smurf population, and it’s giving him a real big pain in the…. well, mouth. I can’t stand to see him hurting. We’re just going to chill out today and take it easy.
My healthy life style is still going great. I don’t think I lost much weight this month, but my clothes seem to be fitting better every day. I can feel and see I’m getting more muscular just by walking and doing push-ups so I’m really excited to see what Carol has in store for me.
Sorry it’s so short today, folks. But Dado has Dado stuff to do and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Well, except if I could make Luke’s pain go away.
I hope everybody out there has a great day and and appreciates the fact they can’t remember what it’s like to have their teeth pop in.Â

Week 11:Â Eat 1 cup of spinach/lettuce each day this week.

Barry J.
Good morning. I was wondering this morning, as Luke was literally prying my eyelids open, if you followed a toddler around all day and did whatever he or she did, what type workout would that be? First of all, I don’t think I would be able to finish a whole day with all the ups, downs, sprints, rolls, and hops. If you take the t.v. out of the equation (which I try to limit Luke to a half hour a day), the boy is never sitting down. Well there is his daily nap, but I think I need that just as much as he does – if not for cleaning up, for resting myself. I do enjoy eating our healthy stuff together because I know it’s good for us, but it’s also getting him on track for a healthy life style while he’s young. If he never has a happy meal in his life, it won’t make me sad one bit.
Luke and I don’t have any plans as of right now, but I’m sure something will pop up. It always does, and the weather person said it’s going to be a real show stopper out there today, so I’m sure it’ll be something outside. We’re both just finishing up our breakfast, and then we’ll grab a shower. You know what I just remembered? I know where there is an old train tunnel in the middle of the woods on an old abandoned train track. I think Luke would really dig that. So the adventure begins.
I hope everybody out there has a great day and gets to take a nap when needed.

Barry J.
